So much for testing with other cards. I got the sound working using device pcm0 at isa? port 0x52C tty irq 5 drq 1 flags 0x10 as indicated in a posting to questions by Martin Dieringer a ./MAKEDEV snd0 completed that. mixer, waveplay all work fine then, but the CD player type apps are all rigged for the scsi drives and devs. Has anyone got a nicer interface to the acd device other than cdcontrol (which does work given a -f /dev/acd0 option) ? So in the end 3.4 as is with a new kernel works very well on a 600E. I have an Adaptec 1480 scsi card but that is Cardbus - that will have to wait until a 4.x release I guess.
