I usually find that a CD-ROM install is best, because the CD set contains lots of third party products that, you might not want right now, but you may want to play with later. It is possible to download files to a DOS (or Win9x) partition, and install FreeBSD from there. Instructions can be found in the install.txt file that you'll find in any distribution's directory on the FTP site. However, it's much better to boot of the FreeBSD installation disks, and get FreeBSD to download the files you need, as it decides that it needs them. This is a much easier operation for you. This method will also be explained in the install.txt file.
