There are so many questions posted to this list that many 
participants only read messages with subject lines they 
think they can help with.  So I added one for you.

The history of the BSD operating system up to approximately 
the time when the FreeBSD Project was established is given 
in Chapter 1 of "The Design and Implementation of the 
4.4 BSD Operating System" by McKusick, Bostic, Karels, and 
Quarterman, Addison Wesley, 1996, ISBN 0-201-54979-4.

It provides more technical information than most such 
histories, so it is a good place to start if you are 
comparing operating systems and not just discussing 
the politics of open source software.

The founding of the FreeBSD project, the AT&T Unix 
lawsuits, etc. are documented in some on-line resources, 
but I don't have pointers to them.
