Compared? > The history of the BSD operating system up to approximately the time when the FreeBSD Project was established is given in Chapter 1 of "The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System" by McKusick, Bostic, Karels, and Quarterman, Addison Wesley, 1996, ISBN 0-201-54979-4. It provides more technical information than most such histories, so it is a good place to start if you are comparing operating systems and not just discussing the politics of open source software.
