First off, a disclaimer...I do not know why I had to take out the 
include of <assert.h> to get this to compile, but when I do take it
out, it compiles cleanly, even with 'cc -Wall'...

Considering that I don't believe that removing it is a solution, I
would like a better solution to the problem, if such exists...
