Unless I hear otherwise, I have gone with replacing all the Linux binaries =
in
the FreeBSD hierarchy with wrapper scripts that set LD_LIBRARY_PATH and then
invoke the Linux binary from the Linux hierarchy.

The porter's handbook seems to suggest that approach.
