At present, you would have to turn on the WDDEBUG in /sys/i386/isa/wd.c. It's at least inconvenient, as it requires the kernel to be rebuilt, and gives you too much information. Sometimes you can encounter a repaired disk with internal cache turned off (or bad). It's good to have a quick indication of this fact, especially if you buy the secondhand unit.
