They are different versions. The VI on solaris is pretty old. Many old unix tools suffer from fixed buffer syndrom. You've found an example of that. Get nvi sources from http://www.bostic.com/vi/, compile and install it. Or go to a sun freeware site and down load a package and install it. Then make sure that /usr/local/bin comes before /usr/bin in your path.
