PCI-X can run at 100 and 133mhz but PCI-Express is bonded channels. For instance a PCI-E 1x (1 channel)would be able to move half the data in a given time as a 2x (2 channels)slot. The 1x or 2x channels still operate at the same speed. PCI-E is a whole new technology and rethinking of busses. As far as a recommendation for NIC's, Intel is the one to beat but they are pricey.
