The video is probably a Trident CyberBlade series and may 'just work' with XF4.1.0, but I suspect you may have to twiddle with the PCI ID numbers in the driver. As for sound, HP has been using the ESS Allegro-1 for sound and winmodem functions for most of the 5xxx series. If this is still the case, then sound will work. If not, then it might not. The SB compatible mode is just smoke and mirrors; only with a real driver loaded will the card respond to the classic SB registers. In any case, I've been very happy with my HP 5190 and I recommend HP to anyone looking for a midrange laptop. Make sure you get a warranty that covers the battery. Has anyone tried the HP N5470 Laptop. It seems to have most everything at a fairly reasonable price. Athlon 4 1GHz, 256MB, 20GB, DVD-CDRW, 3Com mini-PCI NIC/Modem, 15" XGA TFT, Polk Audio Snd. for 2,199 minus 100 rebate. I just found the pdf spec sheet and it uses a trident CBXP video chip that I am afraid may not be supported by XFree86-4. I can't find any reference to it in the docs directory. Is anyone using the CBXP? I assume that the 3Com mini-PCI NIC should work and the modem won't and the sound should since it is soundblaster compatible. Anyone have any suggestions, like don't buy it because . . .?
