Search in Sourceforge.net for 'net-snmp' and you will come down on the home page of the Net-SNMP project, which is the successor to ucd-snmp. The available software, mailing lists, and tutorials are good, but you will probably still need to spend some time with books on the subject, as it is not self-eveident from the tutorials (at least not to me).
