When I try to telnet I just get > an error. >open hostname, the returned error is > "telnet: tcp/telnet: unknown service" what am I over looking? This is the error message you will get from getservbyname( "telnet", "tcp") returning NULL as a result of your /etc/services file: o not being there o not containing the line telnet 23/tcp o not being readable by your user ID/group ID If your telnet is (incorrectly) suid some user, or if you are a member of the group that owns the /etc/services file and permissions are turned off for the group, or if world read permissions aren't there for the file or for the /etc directory, you will have this problem.
