Getting tired of using vi or notepad is a rather vague description. If your problem is syntax, VIM (vi improved) is a vi clone which offers syntax highlighting of Perl. If your problem is version control you can look at RCS or CVS. If you are the only programmer RCS will do this nicely. If you messed up something you can always go back to the previous version. If you want a better way to handle the complexity of 1500+ line programs, you can investigate PERL modules or file includes. Test the subroutines/functions and put them in a module. After that you can concentrate on the main program.
