Since GENERIC has them all uncommented, I dont see how this can be an
error ... 

To Jason Aley (the original poster): Did you make a complete update
(e.g. as described by Nik Clayton [1])? Or did you just update your
kernel?  It sounds to me like your shutdown command might still be 2.x?
