The atalkd thing seems to be a problem with the dc driver. I have one at
home and saw the same problems until I added an atalkd.conf. In
production, I use a fxp card, and I do not see these problems.

As for your hanging issue, I have yet to encounter this. I run an ad
agencies network in my spare time, and they all use Macs ranging from 8.6
to, now, OS X, and do not experience any problems. This is the line I
have in my afpd.conf:

"CAPR@CAPR Office" -transall -uamlist uams_dhx.so,uams_clrtxt.so

This basically says that the machine will show up as CAPR in the zone CAPR
Office. I will support all transports (DDP and TCP) and I only want to
use the given UAMs. I'd be interested in knowing if a similar line works
for you. There have been quite a few changes to afpd since pre6, and pre7
is right around the corner.

If you want, you can download the CVS version from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/netatalk, and see if the problem persists.

I have netatalk 1.5p6_1 running on a 4.3-RELEASE machine and a 4.2-stable
machine.
