I bet one of the components is failing to start. Might be due to a missing library. You should see some errors on the console indicating why GNOME won't start. I will need to see those errors, the command you're using to start GNOME 2, as well as the packages/ports you have installed. It might also be helpful to know what version of FreeBSD you're running.
