I seem to remember reading somewhere - could it be the Red Book? - that the programs in /bin were self-contained, that is compiled without external libraries, so that one could run them in single user mode before /usr was mounted. However, I discovered to my dismay that this definitely is not the case on Solaris. Is it so in FreeBSD?
