Personally, I use zsh for root's shell, and I just have the port
compile it statically, so I don't have to worry about a broken
dependency. There are other caveats, of course.
In my case, I just throw this in /etc/make.conf:
.if ${.CURDIR:M*/shells/zsh}
NO_SHARED=yes
.endif
