I also believe you will need to reinstall to enlarge the root partition. I have experienced a similar problem of running out of space on the root partition. My problem was because of simple neglect of forethought. You can install as root so you have priviledges, however, do not run any Setup's, etc. as root because this will fill the partition with the information copied over from skel.
