Upgrading the BIOS was the solution in that case. interesting. i have cycled through all the different bios options, but it is always the same 1.2 GHz. i recently upgraded to the latest bios, so i probably will have to wait to try a new bios. meanwhile, the laptop is going back to ibm anyway because of its overheating problem and the broken second ram slot. i will tell them to check out the cpu/bios as well.
