Sorry, I forgot to add, that if I build the modules with the kernel, all is 
well.  i.e. if I comment out
#NO_MODULES=     true    # do not build modules with the kernel
#MODULES_WITH_WORLD=true

in /etc/make.conf I can buildworld and buildkernel
