I use exim. http://www.exim.org. Seems to be easier to troubleshoot than sendmail in my opinion, and a heck of alot easier to configure! TONS of documentation, and an active mailing list with the exim mta as well. Give it a shot on a test box sometime, I am sure you will like it!
