If you are setting up a non-production server I would recommend using 1.9.17alpha3 (don't forget to register on the Samba survey !). The share mode code has been mainly re-written for 1.9.17 and is (IMHO :-) *much* more robust. It will now successfully run the Ziff-Davis NetBench tests. Hope this helps, Jeremy Allison, Samba Team.
