Either use the PCVT console driver instead of syscons (then, your console acts like a real VT220 terminal, which all systems support), OR, if you like and want to keep syscons (like me), run SCREEN (it's in the ports collection, in utilities, I think). SCREEN, besides doing other cool stuff like multiple windows and other goodies, emulates a VT100 (or vt220? not sure) terminal.
