Subject: USER PPP Slowness

I have several computer systems running FreeBSD 2.2.2-RELEASE
on a network using the User PPP from this release.
(This system has been very stable, congratulations to all involved).

I have a problem when connecting 2 computers via a modem with
User PPP running on both ends. The problem is that after a period of
time, usually days, the connection will slow down. Ping times from
one system to the other are as follows:

64 bytes from 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=5841.774 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=2 ttl=255 time=4870.321 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=3 ttl=255 time=3861.174 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=4 ttl=255 time=2860.197 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=5 ttl=255 time=1860.253 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=6 ttl=255 time=851.134 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=7 ttl=255 time=120.262 ms

The fix is close the PPP connection and to redial, ie:
PPP on > close
ppp on > dial
The connection now works at 150 ms.
I have 2 seperate sets of systems that exhibit the same problem.

I am using User PPP to connect to my ISP, this link is fine with
no problems. I also have 2 computers connected the same as the above,
but using a serial cable instead of a modem, this link is fine.

The logs show nothing except in ppp.tun0.log I see:
HDLC errors -> FCS: 1 ADDR: 0 COMD: 0 PROTO: 0
but this entry is dated at the time of connection not at the time
of the problem.

Has anyone seen the above problem before, or could someone please
give some tips on how to find the cause of the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help.
