Used CentOS strace to try to get a better picture of its VLC issues with commercial video DVD's, but couldn't find anything useful. So it doesn't appear to be a VirtualBox related issue. Though a FBSD ktrace showed some encrypted DVD component decryption errors, at least the CentOS = VBox client on an FBSD-9.3 host IS able to see and work with host CD/DVD media. The issue, then, may be strictly a CentOS VLC issue. Unfortunately, there aren't many (free) CentOS/Linux movie DVD players available. It may be useful to make a note somewhere that Linux (CentOS) guests may ha= ve a problem with commercial movie DVD playback and leave it at that for now.
