(wrote -1 bytes of xxxxx bytes) after searching through the various archives it appears this is somehow realted to sysinstall getting confused re: mountpoints. However no one seems to really have a fix for it. I've been running FBSD since 2.1.6 and had never seen this error before myself. it's not the easiest system to work on, RLX blade server, serial console only, no floppy or CD-ROM, PXE booted the original 4.8 install on it.
