That adaptec cards sound rather rare, so it's more likely that the driver is stale. If you want a NIC which will last into the future, get one of the Intel Gigabit cards - the driver is officially maintained by an employee of Intel, so you have someone to yell at if it breaks. :) (And Luigi claims that it performs well too...)
