The Inspiron 7000/7500 uses the ESS Maestro 2E sound chip, which is not supported by FreeBSD (even in -current). The soundcard developers would like to support it, but they apparently have no access to a system with the Maestro 2E chip, and so they can't write a driver for it. At one time, there used to be a commercial ($$$) soundcard driver for FreeBSD that worked with the Maestro 2E, but that driver does not work with -current, and there's no indication that it will ever work with -current (although we can always hope). If you want to check it out (it supposedly works for FreeBSD 3.4), see: http://www.4front-tech.com/freebsd.html [ Another possible problem with this commercial driver is that it doesn't allow for IRQ sharing, which can be a problem if your laptop forces IRQ sharing without any provision for changing IRQ assignments. One laptop where this is a problem is the Inspiron 7500, where the soundcard and USB interrupts are both forced to be IRQ 5. ] -- Darryl Okahata darrylo@sr.hp.com DISCLAIMER: this message is the author's personal opinion and does not constitute the support, opinion, or policy of Agilent Technologies, or of the little green men that have been following him all day.
