I am a total idiot: After the video problem, I commented out
"lightdm_enable=YES" in rc.conf, so I didn't boot into a black
locked screen. Instead, I wanted to use startx from the
console. I just forgot that I had commented out the line that
started the xfce4 session in .xinitrc, so there was nothing for
the X server to do. Everything works now (blush).
