I had similar problems installing FreeBSD 2.2.6 The way I got around it was to boot using an older 2.2.5-Release boot floppy, changing the version setting in the config file from 2.2.5 to 2.2.6, and working through the install that way. Once I did that, the PPP connection worked properly and the install went fine.
