Personally speaking (as a relative newby) you may want to get release 4.0 (or 4.1 which is due out any day). The only other piece of advice I could give you is to read, read, read...anything you can get your hands on. Use the FreeBSD site, FAQ, Handbook, as well as the threads in this forum. I'm running FBSD as a gateway and I'm loving every minute of it.
