I also use it with XMMS to avoid the esound latency issues that screw up the visualization. hw.snd.pcm0.maxautovchans looks promising as well, but seems to only have the intended effect on -CURRENT. Unfortunately this feature seems to not be well documented. Only a brief mention at the bottom of the handbook page on sound cards (below the troubleshooting section) added last July.
