(a perfectly standard serial interface) There is a standard GSM AT command set but each manufacturer might have their own quirks and special commands for battery life(!), etc etc. I mention battery life: your average cellphone should have a serial interface available and hence a console for AT commands. The components related to GSM comms are quite generic between cellphones and GSM modems and your results should be the same. Almost all available modems should be perfectly acceptable, you can also try a cell phone+serial"data" cable. At my company we use siemens tc35 modems slaved to 8-port serial cards (comtrol octacable things) for SMS service testing. We haven't had any problems since we started using them three years ago.
