This is currently possible with most news setups. You simply deny the
service (or port) from the outside world.

This is a little trickier (AFAIK) - news was originally for public access.

A solution that I've found is to use a proxy called "nntpcache"
(www.nntpcache.org). This doesn't ask for a password, but will restrict
newsgroup access to certain users. This also has the advantage of being able
to 'pull-in' outside feeds as and when needed.
