Firstly, you need to include a subject in your postings here. I have added one for you. I would guess that you edited /etc/passwd directly instead of using vipw. ALWAYS use vipw. When you do things will be taken care of automatically, and you are assured that you will not corrupt the file. FreeBSD (all BSDs?) use a shadow password system.
