It adds 4982 bytes of kernel bloat to put all the "additional sense code"/"additional sense code qualifier" descriptions in the kernel. It rubs me the wrong way to put it in the kernel but the other suggestions don't work for me either - a lot of the times you need this info is before the system gets off the ground and so tables and ioctls don't solve that problem.
