I've had continuing problems with 1.8.1-RELEASE under FreeBSD 4.4-STABLE
using either the www.snort.org or Arachnids rule sets.  I was asked to
switch to 1.8.1-beta by a commentor on the snort-devel mailing list, and
1.8.1-beta7 does appear to be more stable than 1.8.1-RELEASE for me; it's
been up now for 24 hours.

I ran configure with the FreeBSD ports flags turning off MySQL, OBDC, and
PostGres.

I tried debug mode with 1.8.1-RELEASE, but the version with debug code never 
failed.
