Couple of ideas (from another newbie, relatively speaking, but I have recompiled the kernel successfully a couple of times).... Have you got MYKERNEL in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf? If so, with the first method, make sure you are in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf before running /usr/sbin/config MYKERNEL, and with the second make sure you are in /usr/src but the MYKERNEL file is in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf (I've only ever used the first method myself). That's about all I can think of that could cause it to not start in such a way. But as I said, I'm a newbie myself. > Obviously, I have made a silly blunder. I know I'm learning as I go with FreeBSD, and having lots of fun doing it....got past kernel recompiling and adding audio support, just about got PPP working, IPFW and natd are my current challenges and I think I'm nearly on top of them. All good fun, as long as you're not doing it on a production system :+) I've not dared to go into x-windows yet...largely because I haven't seen the need yet, but I'm sure I'll have a play sometime soon. Hope that helps, anyway. If not, I'm sure someone more experienced will be able to help you out.
