This is most likely to be a Motif problem.

I've seen this too and think its also a Motif problem, or rather a Motif
mismatch.

Internally, Sun have used Motif 1.2 for the JDK.  We're using OpenMotif
which is Motif 2.1.30.  There are some incompatibilities we're stuck with
for the moment.
