What could be wrong? The directory is owned by root, and is not group- or world-writeable, so no other user can delete files from it. Depending on the umask you use for root when *building* ports, you may not need to be root to clean up the work directories, but this 'Makefile.inc' is in a directory that requires root privileges to modify.
