One suggestion (assuming the Phoenix BIOS in the DEC has a user
defined drive type) is get an IDE-INFO utility for DOS that will 
read the 'physical' disk parameters, or look them up, and set the
parameters manually to match.  Then do a IDE-FORMAT, and start
with FDISK...
