Most SCSI tapes should work without any problems.

I have an HP C1537A DDS3 drive in an external SCSI casing that I use without
any problems on various FreeBSD and Linux machines.

Pretty fast (play with your block size if you're using tar), seemingly quite
reliable, very flexible (can also read DDS and DDS2).

As always, take the claim of 2x compression with a pinch of salt.  Hard for
me to say, though, since I'm using my HP drive mostly to back up and
transport MPEG sound data, which will not compress much under any
circumstances.

Yes, I would.  If you want something with an even higher native capacity, try
AIT or DLT technology.  I'm currently testing a Seagate Sidewinder AIT drive,
and it seems to perform magnficently.  Some pointers:
