It's called a user interface. Whether this interface is graphical or textual is irrelevant, but the usability of combining mkisofs and cdrdao with cdrecord (or burncd) is real. Since there are no UI frontends to burncd, treating ATA devices as SCSI means I can now use cdrecord and its frontends instead.
