Most of handheld scanners have a serial interface - it' pretty easy to
connect a scanner to serial  port and read value from port. I wrote a simple
C program to read for one of them about 6 years ago. Scanner returns a
numeric string - you have to convert it to a number. Scanner I worked with
was able to read codes in 17 different standards, but it was transparent for
me.
