I remember seeing it too; I just found the other way first... :{) > Perhaps on a future release of the FreeBSD cdrom a compressed and/or > abridged copy of the mail archive and maybe a simple database program to > access it could be included. Any thoughts? I think that's a fine idea, but I see some complications: 1. Who's going to edit the archive? I've been saving stuff for a few months now and have over 46Kb so far of just FreeBSD stuff - that's a lot of data [but perhaps not a lot for a CDROM?] 2. What search program would be used? Most of the ones I've seen [and since this isn't my field I'm not really up] require massive index files and don't work on compressed files. Also, whatever was chosen would have to have a really nice front-end. 3. Who's going to maintain it... :{) On the issue of [1], I'm sure we could tremendously decrease the size of the archive by stripping out headers; I've done this in the past and decreased the size of the mailfiles by (usually) over 30%, since most messages are a few lines of real message and a PILE o' lines of SMTP headers. I think it would also be useful for a preprocessor to gather the "threads" together and present them as a clump. Then, with a reasonable text search program [anyone know of one] this might be doable... Has anyone actually done this? I've used FreeWAIS on my mail and it works OK but to be honest the XWAIS program, uh, sucks. Other experiences? BTW, I'm NOT volunteering!! :{) Thanks, Mike +--------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ |Mike Newell | The opinions expressed herein are | |NASA Science Internet Network Systems | my own, and do not necessarily | |Sterling Software, Inc. | reflect those of the NSI program, | |MNewell@nsipo.nasa.gov | Sterling Software, NASA, or anyone | |+1-202-434-8954 | else. | +--------------------------------------+------------------------------------+
