Are you using too high of a resolution for 32bit color?  
Honestly, I doubt you even need or want 32 bit color, 24 
bit color is often faster.  

In fact, I generally leave my display at 16 bit color, 
because I can't tell the differece and it does run 
somewhat faster.

Be sure you have XVideo support enabled on your card (if
supported).  You can run xvinfo to see for yourself.  

Also, I'd reccomend upgrading to XFree 4 if you are still
using XFree 3.3.6.  XFree 4 is faster for day to day work
than XFree 3, and it supports almost as many cards as XFree
3 does (and the unsupported ones are usually ancient).

If you can't get Xvideo working, you might want to do a
google search for the GATOS project.  They can help you
with your ATI card.
