Caveat. Some ports expect the tarballs to be in a sub-directory of
/usr/ports/distfiles. For instance XFree86 expects them to be in
/usr/ports/distfiles/xc, Staroffice in
/usr/ports/distfiles/staroffice5

Check the ``DIST_SUBDIR= '' line in the Makefile, it gives you the
name of the sub-directory of /usr/ports/distfiles to use.
