Applications accessing Mailbox style mailboxes must have exclusive access
to prevent conflicts and corruption (all messages in one big file).  The
Maildir format (used by Qmail and Postfix) is less prone to corruption
since each message is stored in a separate file.

You could try running Postfix with Courier's pop3d server.
