This error message has plagued me since the machine was built last > March; now it's starting to irk me! It looks to me as if your /var/tmp file system filled up. It would seem that under these circumstances there should be an error message to this effect, but I can't confirm this. Rebuilding the locate database takes up a lot of space--I had 30 MB in /var/tmp, and it wasn't enough.
