Out of curiosity, what situation requires it to not complain in this case?

In my opinion every message sent should have a valid return address.

Anyways, you might be able to find what you want at http://www.sendmail.org/
The site has pretty good docs.

Hi gentlemen,
I am testing Sendmail to see how flexible it can be but I am already
seeing a small hurdle. If someone sends e-mail which does not have a
From: (return address), ie
From:<>
To: questions@freebsd.org

Then Sendmail complains....howto solve this??

Thanks
